John Piper Biography

John Piper is a reformed Baptist theologian, author, preacher, and founder of desiringGod.org. This was after his book Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist. He is also the founder of Bethlehem College & Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

John was born and partially raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee to Bill and Ruth Piper. Soon after, Piper’s family relocated to Greenville, South Carolina where he spent the rest of his childhood. He later graduated from Wade Hampton High School.

Between 1964 and 1968, Piper attended Wheaton College where he majored in literature and minored in philosophy. After college, he studied and received a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. He further pursued several courses; studying the writings of Jonathan Edwards.

From 1971-1974, he did some doctoral work in New Testament Studies in Munich, West Germany. His dissertation, Love Your Enemies, was later published by Cambridge University Press and Baker Book House. Upon his doctorate completion, John taught Biblical studies at Bethel University and Seminary in Saint Paul, Minnesota for six good years.

In 1980, Piper became a preacher, and pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Ever since John has been working there as the lead pastor. He later became famous when his book Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist was published.

Later in 1994, Piper established his Desiring God Ministries. As of today, this ministry puts all of Piper’s sermons and articles online, running from the last three decades. It also offers books, CDs, and DVDs.

On January 11, 2006, John was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He had surgery on February 14, 2006. From May 1, 2010, Piper took an eight-month leave from his ministry. In June 2011, John announced that he would be stepping down the role of a pastor. On May 20, 2012, Jason Meyer was voted to take up the position of Pastor for Preaching& Vision, replacing John Piper.
