Amanda Ruggeri Yale University
During her second year at Yale, Amanda was drugged and raped. Ruggeri recalls attending an Old Campus party with a friend, the friend’s boyfriend, and a boyfriend’s friend. “We didn’t know anyone at the party, but that didn’t seem to matter at Yale; everyone looked secure and welcome.”
After someone delivered Ruggeri and her female friend shots that she believes were drugged, the safe and inviting mood vanished. Both of the women passed out. The next morning, the friend’s boyfriend filled in the details: Ruggeri couldn’t talk, couldn’t walk, and tumbled down the stairs after taking the shot.
Her companions dragged her across the courtyard and left her with the boyfriend’s friend, who had sex with her despite her incoherence and bedwetting. Ruggeri reported the rape to “a campus official,” who provided her with a Kleenex and a brochure describing her options.
She states that she had a fleeting thought about revealing her story to a disciplinary commission. “But I knew I couldn’t do it,” she says. I would have shattered if one person, just one, had said what I feared the most: that I had somehow brought this on myself.”
