Andrew Dice Clay Biography
Andrew Dice Clay is an American stand-up comedian and actor who gained fame back in the late 1980s as the first ever stand-up to perform and sell out tickets at Madison Square Garden. He is also known for playing various characters in comedy films and TV shows like The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine (2013) and A Star Is Born 92018). Clay’s popular comedy specials include Dice (1989), The Day the Laughter Died (1990), Dice Rules (1991), Filth, Face Down and 40 Too Long (1992) among others.
Clay was born and brought up by his Native American family living in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, New York. He grew up as a very active boy who enjoyed making impressions and entertaining guests with his spontaneous personality at every family event. Andrew attended and graduated from Madison High School in Brooklyn. After high school, he began performing as a drummer for the Catskill Mountains circuit in the early 1970s. He used to play at weddings and bar mitzvahs by the same Clay Silvers. Eventually, Dice failed to create his own musical band and dropped out of college in order to pursue a full-time career in comedy
Dice then began doing stand-up for the first time back in 1978 by auditioning to perform at Pips comedy club called Sheepshead Bay. His work was incredible and he was chosen to be the headliner of the show for two consecutive nights under the name Andrew Clay. Clay’s comedy style during that time included him doing The Diceman character based on Buddy Love played by Jerry Lewis in The Nutty Professor movie.
In early 1980, Dice moved to Los Angeles and bagged a job at a local comedy store. He did his comedy work while auditioning for other TV roles across Hollywood. Andrew eventually landed his first role in a 1982 movie called Wacko. He also did his first-ever comedy special called The Mixtape That Hates You (1988). This particular comedy special was received very well by the public. Thus, boosting his fame as a comedian. Clay then went on to play various roles while releasing more stand-up specials from the early 1980s to the 1990s. He now stars in his latest film Pam & Tommy released in 2022.
