Regarding his education, Andy attended Kennedy High School and graduated in 1976, and was fascinated by fine arts. Afterward, he started his career as a carpenter and cabinet maker.
While growing up, Andy was interested in exploring nature. After his graduation, he traveled across the nation. Bassich really wanted to visit Alaska, however, the same year, his sister was getting married, so he returned home and did carpentry jobs for a couple of years.
In 1980, Bassich began his journey to Alaska to fulfill his dream of earning a living in Alaska. While there, he used to do gardening in the summertime and hunted and gathered garden supplies in winter. He struggled really hard to survive in Alaska. After a while, Andy started working as a musher and lived on the riverbank of the Yukon along with 37 sled dogs.
