Andy Lack is an American businessman, television executive, and film executive. He is the former chairman of NBC News and MSNBC having served from 2015 to 2020.

Born in New York City, Lack joined the Browning School in New York. Afterward, he attended Connecticut Boarding School The Gunnery. Having passed well, Andy joined the University of Paris, Sorbonne, and Boston University’s College of Fine Arts where he graduated in 1968.

After his graduation, Lack featured in various television commercials and off-Broadway production. Later in 1976, he joined CBS News as a TV Commercials producer. He then did 60 Minutes before he assumed another role of producing CBS Reports between 1978 and 1985.

In 1982, Lack served as a correspondent on The American-Israel Connection. Later, he worked with Boll Moyers in the early ’80s as the producer of both Our Times With Bill Moyers (1983) and Crossroads (1984).

In 1976, Andy landed a job at CBS News as a producer for Who’s Who, a personality-driven television show. This led to a long-term job as the producer for 60 Minutes. In this role, he produced “Inside Afghanistan”, and “Kissinger and The Oil Embargo” to mention but a few.

Later, Lack became the executive producer for CBS Reports a position he held for 7 years. He closely followed with yet another role, The executive producer of West 57th, a long-format news program cast by Meredith Vieira.

In 1993, Andrew was hired as the president of NBC News in an effort to restore credibility to the news division. This was after the News program, Dateline faked an explosion during a truck safety segment.

Under his management, he steered NBC Nightly News with anchor Tom Brokaw to be the number one rated evening news program just in three years. He also expanded Dateline from once a week to multiple nights within a week.

He further relocated Today to a new $15 million street-side studio, Studio 1A. Within the program, he replaced Bryant Gumbel with Matt Lauer. Lauer steered Today to be the highest-rated morning news show for the period along.

In addition, MSNBC was created under Lack’s stewardship. In 2001, Andy left the news division to serve as the president and chief operating officer of NBC.
