Anna Palmer Biography
Anna Palmer is an American political journalist based in Washington, D.C., and is the founder of Punchbowl news. She has also been the CEO of Punchbowl news since January 2021. In addition, she has been the host of the related Daily Punch Podcast. Prior to this, she was a reporter for Politico and later became its senior Washington correspondent.
Palmer attended high school in Kinder, North Dakota, and served as a page for U.S. Senator Kent Conrad. She is a 2004 graduate of St. Olaf College, where she double-majored in political science and English, with a concentration in mass communications. She also wrote for its newspaper, the Manitou Messenger, becoming its executive editor.
After graduating, her first significant job was at the biweekly lobbying industry newsletter Influence. In 2005, Anna became one of the Key journalists working for the Legal Times, the parent company of Influence, investigating the activities of lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who orchestrated a vast network of corruption.
Later on, she moved to Roll Call, a prominent Washington-insider newsletter in 2007, and in 2011, Palmer moved to Politico – a premier Washington political reporting journal. In October of the same year, she was one of the teams of Politico reporters who investigated and reported on allegations against Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain.
Palmer took the lead in Women Rule and following this, she hosted Politico’s Women Rule podcast. In Politico, she partnered with fellow journalist Jake Sherman, to cover political affairs in the capital. Together, they have reported corruption among Democrats and Republicans. From 2016 to 2020, they co-anchored the Politico Playbook.
However in late 2020, Anna and Sherman departed Politico to start Punchbowl News, an online news service focused on non-partisan reporting of power players, and inside events and leaders, in Congress and the Washington establishment.
