Dame Anna Wintour is a British journalist based in New York City who has served as editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988 and Global Chief Content Officer for Condé Nast since 2020. Wintour is also the artistic director of Condé Nast and the Global Editorial Director of Vogue

Wintour was born and raised in London, England. She attended school at the independent North London Collegiate School. However, she dropped out of North London Collegiate in 1966 and four years later became a fashion assistant for Harper’s & Queen magazine. She also served as editor of British Vogue and as editor of House & Garden. later on, Anna moved to New York with her boyfriend, freelance journalist Jon Bradshaw. In New York, she became a junior fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar in New York City in 1975.

While there, Wintour worked for nine months and was fired, and later after she was hired as the first position as a fashion editor, at Viva, a women’s adult magazine. In 1980, she replaced Elsa Klensch as a fashion editor for a new women’s magazine named Savvy. A year later, Dame became the fashion editor of New York. Seven years later, Wintour replaced Grace Mirabella as editor-in-chief at American Vogue. The move came three years after the American launch of the French magazine Elle, which consistently threatened to reduce Vogue’s circulation and advertising revenue.

As the chief editor of Vogue, Anna began featuring prominent women in her Vogue including actresses Nicole Kidman and politician Hillary Clinton rather than exclusively using models. Wintour also directed Condé Nast Publications where she helped launched several spin-offs, Teen Vogue, Vogue Living, and Men’s Vogue. Most notable was Teen Vogue which published more ad pages and earned more advertiser revenue than Elle Girl and Cosmo Girl. In addition, Men’s Vogue was one of the most and first issues in Condé Nast’s history to add 164 ad pages that year. For her work, Wintour was named “Editor of the Year” for this brand expansion by AdAge.

Furthermore, Wintour appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to promote the show and defend the relevance of fashion in a tough economy. Also, she was elected by The American Society of Magazine Editors to its Hall of Fame in 2010. Four years later, the Metropolitan Museum of Art named its Costume Institute complex after Wintour, which was opened by First Lady Michelle Obama. That same year, she was named the 39th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes. Likewise, Anna starred in The Fashion Fund, which aired on Ovation TV that year.

Additionally, in the ceremony at Buckingham Palace, Wintour was created as Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth for her contributions to fashion and journalism.
