Bill Plante Biography
Bill Plante is an American journalist and veteran reporter who is well known for being a White House correspondent during the administrations of Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. During the administration of the first President Bush, Bill was CBS News’ State Department correspondent from 1989 to 1992.
His reports are seen across CBS News platforms including “CBS This Morning,” and the “CBS Evening News.” Following his formal credentials, he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in humanities from Loyola University in 1959. He also studied political science at Columbia University graduating in 1964.
He has been based in CBS News’ Washington bureau since December 1968. Prior to his first White House assignment, he covered general and off-year elections. He even covered the national political conventions. In 1968, Bill reported on the campaigns of Hubert Humphrey and Richard Nixon. Furthermore, in the summer of 1976, he covered Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale’s vice presidential campaigns.

After the State Department, he covered Secretary of State James Baker’s trips to the Middle East.
Later on from 1988 to 1995, he served as an anchor of the “CBS Sunday Night News.” From 1966 to 1976, he served as a correspondent in the Chicago bureau. During that time, Bill served two of his four tours of duty in Vietnam. Plante most recently worked as the Senior White House Correspondent for CBS. He also reported for CBS This Morning as well as the CBS Evening News. Currently, Bill resides in Wahington with his wife.
