Harry Smith is an American television journalist currently working for NBC News, MSNBC, and CNBC as a senior correspondent. Previously, Smith hosted the CBS News morning programs, The Early Show, and CBS This Morning for 17 years.

Harry left CBS News to join NBC News as a correspondent and the now-canceled newsmagazine Rock Center with Brian Williams. Beginning in November 2015, Harry also worked as an anchor for MSNBC where he conducted daytime live coverage of breaking news and events.

Smith attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, the United States of America, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and Theatre.

Smith’s first work after graduating was at radio stations KHOW and KIMN in Denver, Colorado, and WLW in Cincinnati, Ohio between 1973 and 1981.

He worked for Denver’s KRMA-TV from 1981 to 1982 before relocating to KMGH-TV, the then-CBS affiliate in Denver, from 1982 to 1985 as a reporter and news anchor. He joined CBS News as a reporter in 1986 and was later promoted to a correspondent in 1987.

Harry contributed to The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather, 48 Hours, and CBS News documentaries for 13 years. He spent the majority of his career at CBS anchoring the CBS Morning Show. Harry, on the other hand, joined CBS This Morning as a co-anchor on November 30, 1987.

Following his departure from the show, Harry hosted a weekly segment called Travels with Harry on the CBS Evening News. This show focused on interesting individuals and places from all throughout the United States.

On October 28, 2002, Harry returned to the CBS morning show, then named The Early Show. He anchored the program for 8 years before CBS announced that Harry along with co-anchors Maggie Rodriquez, and Dave Price would be leaving the show end of 2010.

Upon leaving the program, Smith became a Senior Correspondent for CBS News and a substitute anchor for the CBS Evening News, Face the Nation, and CBS News Sunday Morning.

On July 8, 2011, CBS News announced that Smith would be leaving the network after 25 years of service. NBC News subsequently announced that Smith would join the network and contribute to the prime-time newsmagazine, Rock Center with Brian Williams.

However, after the cancellation of Rock Center with Brian Williams, Harry has continued to report regularly on NBC News platforms. In addition, he is the substitute anchor on NBC Nightly News. He further contributes a weekly story on Sunday Mornings on the weekend edition of NBC’s Today in a segment called, Sundays with Harry.

Currently, he is part of a rotating group of co-hosts that have been filling the co-anchor chair. This was after the seat was vacated by Lester Holt after he was named anchor of NBC Nightly News.
