Bill Ritter Biography
Bill Ritter is an American journalist who is currently working as the co-anchor of WABC-TV New York’s Eyewitness News at 6 p.m. since February 2001. Ritter is also a correspondent for the ABC News program 20/20. He joined Eyewitness News in the summer of 1998 as a weekend anchor and co-anchored the 11 p.m. news since September 1999.
Ritter attended San Diego State University from 1968 to 1972. He was then kicked out of school for demonstrating against the Vietnam War. Forty years later Bill went back to college, graduating from The New School in May 2016.
Bill started his career in business and then as an investigative reporter for KSND-TV (NBC affiliate) in San Diego from February 1987 to January 1990. Ritter, best known for her white-collar crime investigations, received four Emmy Awards. In 1989, Bill was honored for his investigative reporting in uncovering a local stock swindle, as well as for his “overall journalistic enterprise.”
Ritter started his career in print journalism in 1972 when he served as a reporter and then business editor of the San Diego County edition of The Los Angeles Times from February 1984 to January 1987. In addition, he worked as a reporter and editor for the San Diego Business Journal from June 1980 to January 1984.
A native of Los Angeles, Bill reported on the Rodney King trial and the subsequent Los Angeles riots for the Fox Television Network. From August 1991 through February 1992 Bill also served as a reporter for the Fox Network’s nationally syndicated show Entertainment Daily Journal (E.D.J.); and from February 1990 to August 1991 was an investigative reporter for KTTV-TV (Fox Television) in Los Angeles. He also was an anchor for the station’s Gulf War coverage.

Prior to joining Eyewitness News, Bill worked at ABC News in January 1993 as a co-anchor of Good Morning America Sunday. His feature reporting for GMA includes revealing interviews with boxers Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield, golfers Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer, former evangelist Jim Bakker and Peanuts cartoonist Charles Schulz.
In September 1999, Bill was officially named co-anchor of Eyewitness News 11 pm broadcast with Diana Williams. Seven months later, he was added to co-anchor the 6 pm edition of the newscast as well. In 2003, Bill was joined at 6 & 11 pm by Liz Cho upon William’s move to the 5 pm broadcasts.
