Brittney Griner Biography
Brittney Griner is an American professional Basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She is currently imprisoned in Russia after cartridges containing less than a gram of hashish oil were found in her luggage. She was pledged guilty of the charges on July 1 2022 and was sentenced to nine years in prison on August 4, 2022.
About her education, she attended Nimitz High School in Houston. While there, she played basketball and many other sports including volleyball. As a freshman in college, she practiced with the boys’ basketball team and worked with a Nimitz football coach to develop her leg strength in preparation for learning to dunk. She even got a meeting with Shaquille O’Neal after videos of her ducking went viral on YouTube.
During her senior year, she led the Nimitz Cougars to the Texas 5A girls’ basketball state championship game, where they lost 52-43 to Mansfield Summit High School. She dunked 52 times in 32 games as a senior, setting a single-game record of seven dunks against Aldine High School. In addition, she recorded 25 blocks in a game against Houston Alife Hastings on November 11, 2008.

In 2009, she was named the nation’s No. 1 high school women’s basketball player. Following this, she was selected to the 2009 Phoenix Mercury All-American basketball team. Later on, she received the Best Female Athlete ESPY Award in 2012. She also signed an endorsement with Nike in 2013.
In 2016, she was on the United States women’s Olympic team 2016 and led them to victory at the Rio Olympics. She protested the Star Spangled Banner and stated she would not be on the court while the national anthem was played during openers in 2020. In 2021, she was named to the United States women’s national team for the 2020 Olympics.
