Connie Smith is an American country music artist and songwriter. She is best known for her vocal style and has been very influential to many women in the same industry.
Smith went to study at Salem-Liberty High School and graduated in 1959 as the class salutatorian. While growing up, her stepfather and her brother used to play the mandolin and fiddle. In addition, one of her brothers is a guitarist. Smith would listen to the Grand Ole Opry radio broadcast every Saturday night.
Smith performed in a talent contest at the Frontier Ranch country music park near Columbus, Ohio. She won the contest and five silver dollars. Additionally, Bill Anderson who is a country artist heard Smith’s performance and was impressed by her voice.
In 1964, Connie ran into Bill Anderson again at a country music concert. Bill invited her to perform together on Ernest Tubb’s Midnite Jamboree program in Nashville, Tennessee. Smith later returned to Nashville to do some demo recordings by Anderson that he planned on pitching to other country singers.
In the 1970s, Smith started recording gospel music more frequently. She focused more on religion and became popular at concerts and music venues for her religious songs. In 1979, Smith entered semi-retirement. However, Smith did collaborate with Marty Stuart in the 1990s, and that prompted her return to the industry. The duo continued singing together and performing, and she has recorded two more studio collections.
