Cyndi Lauper is an American Award-winning singer, songwriter, actress, and activist who rose to fame in the 1980s with a string of pop hits such as “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” She burst onto the charts with her debut album, She’s So Unusual (1983). Lauper scored a string of hits that included “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and won the 1984 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
Born in Astoria, New York, she spent her early childhood in Brooklyn. However, when she was about four years old, the family moved to Ozone Park, Queens, where she lived in a railroad-style apartment through her teenage years. Growing up, she felt like an outcast and her parents broke up when she was five. Despite her hard times, she discovered a love of singing and music at an early age and was writing her own songs by age 12.
After eventually graduating from high school, she worked a number of odd jobs before her music career took off. Lauper worked as a waitress, and office assistant, and also sang in a Japanese restaurant. During this time, she also played in a number of bands. Lauper has her first taste of success with the band Blue Angel, which landed a record deal.

Going solo, she burst onto the charts with her debut album. She’s So Unusual. With her electric clothes, flamboyantly styled hair, and contagious pop melodies, she took the music world by surprise. The 1983 recording sold over 6 million copies in the United States alone. A song in the album “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” became a female party anthem.
She went on to become wildly popular almost overnight scoring a string of hits that included “Time After Time,” “She Bop,” and “All Through the Night.” Lauper was further rewarded for her work when she won the 1984 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. In 1985, she released “The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough” for the soundtrack of the film The Goonies.
Outside music, she has been a tireless activist for the gay rights movement. She helped establish the True Colors Fund, which works to promote awareness and fight for equality. Her song “Above the Clouds” celebrates the memory of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man beaten to death.

As a member of the Matthew Shepard Foundation Board, she devoted a concert tour in 2005 to promote the Foundation’s message. She also co-founded the True Colors tour for Human Rights throughout the United States and Canada in June 2007. In 2008, she started True Colors United. Lauper set up the True Colors Residence in New York City for LGBT homeless youths.
In April 2010, TCU launched the Give a Dam campaign, to help get straight people more involved in LGBT rights. In July 2015, while announcing her support for the National Psoriasis Foundation and Novartis on The Today Show, she admitted she had recently been diagnosed with psoriasis.
Recently, she was featured as a guest vocalist on the track ‘Blame It on Christmas’ by Shea Diamond, in November 2021. The official video was released the following month. Lauper was to perform at the 2022 MusiCaresPerson of the Year Tribute Show honoring Joni Mitchell on April 1.
