Janaya Khan Biography

Janaya Khan is a well-known Canadian social activist from Toronto. She is a co-founder of Black Lives Matter Toronto and a Black Lives Matter Network, worldwide ambassador. Khan identifies as a black man who is both queer and non-binary. In their work, the Black Lives Matter movement, queer theory, back feminism, and organized protest techniques are all explored in-depth in their work.

The Black Lives Matter Global Foundation Network transferred millions to a Canadian organization operated by Janaya to purchase a vast estate that had once functioned as the Communist Party’s headquarters, according to the New York Post on January 29, 2022. According to Toronto property documents obtained by The Post, M4BJ, a Toronto-based non-profit founded by Khan and other Canadian activists, paid $6.3 million in cash for the 10,000-square-foot historic building in July 2021.

Khan left the company in 2021, a month after The Washington Post disclosed they had spent $3.2 million on houses in Georgia and Los Angeles. She vehemently disputed that BLM funds were used to purchase the houses.

Khan was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. He received a Bachelor of Arts from New York University, graduating with an honors degree in English Language and Literature. She currently resides in Los Angeles, serving as program director for Color Of Change and as a speaker with Keppler Speakers Bureau.

Activism

Janaya believes that the police’s primary mission is to create criminals and that they do not keep the public safe. Instead of police, they (Khan) choose “quick reaction justice teams.” They discussed the challenges of growing up with an intersecting identity in a society with limited resources and understanding of intersectionality and transfeminism in a 2016 interview with Maclean’s magazine. Carding (a Canadian police policy in which people are stopped and questioned without regard to a specific infraction) made them understand how accustomed their neighborhood had become to a significant police presence accompanied by discriminatory questioning, according to Khan. Incidents like this sparked their activism and eventually led to the formation of Black Lives Matter Toronto.

Following the killing of 33-year-old Jermaine Carby, who was shot and killed during a routine traffic check in Brampton, Ontario, on September 24, 2014, Khan and fellow Black Lives Matter Toronto co-founder Sandy Hudson organized a solidarity protest in October 2014. This incident occurred a month after Michael Brown was shot and killed in Ferguson, Missouri. After the demonstration was announced, over 4,000 people gathered outside the US Consulate to show their support. They decided to meet with Patrisse Cullors, one of the leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States, in order to build on this momentum. This meeting provided the groundwork for Black Lives Matter to go beyond the United States and become an international movement.

…..

Khan has organized a number of protests and events in Toronto, largely in response to police violence in the US and Canada. They assisted in the organization of a sit-in during Pride Toronto in July 2016. The protesters brought a list of demands, including more representation of minority groups and no uniformed police presence during Pride. Khan also gave talks at a number of universities across Canada, including the University of Toronto and York University.
