Dan Roan is an American journalist currently working as the weekday sports anchor of the WGN Evening News at Five and Six and WGN News and Nine. He joined the WGN-TV Sports team in February 1984 and has worn many hats at WGN. Dan started his career in 1977 at WCIA-TV in Champaign, Illinois, where he was a sports director for seven years.
A native of Keokuk, Iowa, Roan graduated from Illinois State University in 1976. Dan hosts Instant Replay, WGN’s expanded look at weekend sports on Sundays at 9:40 pm. Moreover, he has hosted and co-produced pregame and halftime show for WGN’s NBA and Major League Baseball telecasts.
In addition, Dan is a substitute play-by-play announcer for WGN’s Bulls, Cubs, and White Sox games. He was also the lead announcer for the station’s telecasts of DePaul University basketball. In 1988, he worked play-by-play on the station’s Notre Dame football telecasts when the fighting Irish won a national championship.
With the addition of the Chicago Blackhawks to WGN’s programming schedule, Roan also hosts between-period segments during hockey telecasts. Dan has been recognized during his time a WGN-TV and has won multiple Emmy Awards for his work as a host, producer, reporter, play-by-play announcer. In 1994, Dan won three Emmys for sports-related programming.
