Dan Skoff Biography
Dan Skoff is an Emmy Award-Winning Chief Meteorologist who presently works as the Chief Meteorologist at KNWA, FOX 24 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the United States of America. He can be seen on Fox 24 at 9 p.m. on weeknights at 5, 6, and 10 p.m., and on Fox 24 at 5 p.m. on weekends.
Since he was a child, Skoff has had an interest in the weather. Everyone in his family would flee to the basement as a storm approached, but he would peer out a top-story window or climb the roof for a better view.
Dan became the chief meteorologist of KNWA in June 2006. He is a member of the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. He’s also the proud holder of the AMS Television Seal of Approval. Skoff received his CBM (Certified Broadcast Meteorologist) and AMS certifications. You must pass a tough 100-question exam administered by the American Meteorological Society in order to attain this rank.
Skoff was born and brought up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but he feels completely at home here in Northwest Arkansas. When a tornado approached within a quarter-mile of his house when he was eight years old, he decided he wanted to be a meteorologist.
“I’ll never forget how dark the horizon was before the storm; it was almost weird.” There was a great brilliant gorgeous rainbow just after the storm, and you could hear the birds chirping in the trees. We walked a little distance in our area and saw full devastation in front of us. “From that point on, I was addicted,” Skoff added.
Dan decided to learn and experience everything Mother Nature has to offer from one of the nation’s best meteorology schools, so he went to the University of Oklahoma and earned his Bachelor of Science in Meteorology. Let’s be fair: Arkansas doesn’t have a meteorology program.
Dan began his broadcasting career in 1998 with CBS affiliate KWTV/Oklahoma City, where he worked as a professional media storm tracker for three years, alerting the public to severe weather threats. Then it was off to Amarillo, where he spent almost three years as the weekend meteorologist for NBC and FOX station KAMR/KCIT. Skoff spent nearly three years as the weekend meteorologist for KARK (a sister station to KNWA) in Little Rock.
…
Skoff and his family adore living in the beautiful state of Arkansas. He has experienced all of the varied sorts of weather that the Natural State has to offer during his time as a meteorologist. The greatest tornado outbreak in Arkansas history on January 21, 1999, covering disastrous Hurricane Katrina as it pushed ashore from just north of New Orleans, and the winter storm that gave a white Christmas for most of Arkansas in 2004 are among the most notable meteorological events he worked on.
In addition, Skoff will use his extensive experience and up-to-date understanding of extreme weather to keep you and your family safe during the storm. Storm chasing and capturing spectacular weather film is one of Dan’s favorite things to do. Skoff has encountered over 90 tornadoes since his first storm pursuit in 1996, including the devastating storms that struck Oklahoma City in 1999.
