Dr. Miguel Cardona is an American educator currently serving as the 12th United States Secretary of Education under President Joe Biden since 2021. A member of the Democratic Party, Dr Miguel was confirmed by the U.S. Senate by a vote of 64–33 on March 1, 2021.
Being a native of Meriden, Connecticut, Miguel started his career as a fourth-grade teacher at Putnam Elementary School. Later in 2003, he was named the principal of Hanover School in Meriden, making him the youngest principal in the state at the age of 27.

In 2004, Cardona completed a professional sixth-year certification at UConn, earning a Doctor of Education in 2011. Later in 2003, he was transferred to Hanover Elementary School and promoted to be the youngest principal in the state’s history for ten years.
From 2015-2019, Miguel served as an Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning in his hometown. At the same time, he was also an adjunct professor of education at the University of Connecticut’s Department of Education Leadership. During his career, Cardona had his main focus on closing gaps between English language learners and their peers.
In August 2019, Cardona was appointed as Commissioner of Education by Governor Ned Lamont, becoming the first Latino to hold such a position.
Shading more light on his career, Cardona emerged as a candidate for United States Secretary of Education in President Joe Biden’s cabinet. This was a decision made in December 2020, Biden leaning towards him over two other high-profile teachers union leaders; Randi Weingarten and Lily Eskelsen Garcia.
