Hubie Brown Biography
Hubert Jude Brown is a renowned retired American basketball coach and player. Currently, he is a television analyst for ABC and ESPN and a two-time NBA Coach of the Year. Formerly, he worked as the head coach for several teams such as the Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks, and Memphis Grizzlies of the National Basketball Association ( NBA). Furthermore, he was born in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, and brought up in Elizabeth, New Jersey.
Talking about his education, Brown attended school at St. Mary of the Assumption High School where he graduated in 1951. While still there, he won the state championship for all the sports such as football, basketball, and baseball. Furthermore, he also enrolled himself at Niagara University, where he was a college basketball and baseball team member. There he graduated from college with a degree in education in 1955 before later attending US Army. At the US Army, Brown served for a few years and also took part in the US Army’s basketball team.
After that, he joined the Rochester Colonels of the Eastern Professional Basketball League where he played for a period of time. His professional career as a coach began in 1955 at St. Mary Academy in Little Falls, New York where he coached both basketball and baseball. In addition, he served as a coach for various high schools such as Cranford High Schoo in Cranford and Fair Lawn High School in Fair Lawn.

Later on, he was promoted and become an assistant coach for one season at the College of William & Mary and then later as assistant coach for Duke University. Besides that, Hubie also served as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks under Larry Costello. Additionally, Brown also become the head coach for the Kentucky Colonels of the American Basketball Association. There he led his team to the 1975 ABA Championship before he rejoined the NBA as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks.
In his first season with the team, he led them and acquired 31-51 points. In the following years, the Hawks rebounded into a 500 team, finishing 41-41 points. Jude continued to coach the team, leading it to the Central Division Titles in 1979 and 1980. Afterward, he joined the New York Knicks in 1982, where he stayed until he was fired in 1986 after beginning the fourth season. Two years later, he become hired as an analyst for CBS and also worked as a local broadcast for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Similarly, he also worked for Detroit Piston before joining TNT in the early 1990s. During his time there, Brown continued anchoring TNT’s basketball coverage through the 2001–02 season. Shortly after his departure from the Grizzlies, Brown signed a contract with ABC as their top NBA analyst. There he worked alongside Al Michaels and Mike Breen on some regular-season and playoff games such as the 2006 NBA Finals. In 2016, he worked together with Mike Tirico and later with Mark Jones and Dave Pasch on ABC and ESPN.
