Stephen A. Smith is an American journalist who is currently working as a sports radio host and commentator on ESPN’s First Take, where he appears with Molly Qerim. In addition, he makes frequent appearances as an NBA analyst on SportsCenter. Furthermore, he is an NBA analyst for ESPN on NBA Countdown and NBA broadcast on ESPN.

In relation to his education, Smith attended the Fashion Institute of Technology for a period of one year. He went on to receive a basketball scholarship to attend Winston-Salem State University, in North Carolina. In College, Smith played basketball under Hall of Fame coach Clarence Gaines.

While on the team, he wrote a column for the university newspaper, The News Argust. In the article, he argued that Gaines should retire due to health issues. Smith went on to graduate in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communication.

After graduating, he began his print media career with the Winston-Salem Journal, the Greensboro News and Record, and the New York Daily News. Since 1994, he has had a position as a writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer. Later on, he began reporting on the Philadelphia 76ers as their NBA columnist, and eventually, as the general sports columnist.

On August 23, 2007, the Inquirer announced that he would no longer be writing columns and would instead be demoted back to the position of general assignment reporter. In 2008, the Inquirer ended its relationship with Smith with him starting his own blog, stephena.com. However, he returned to the Philadelphia Inquirer after winning an arbitrator’s ruling that he was reinstated.

On April 11, 2005, he became the host of a weekday noon to 2 p.m. radio show on WEPN in New York City. The show was shifted to the 2-4 p.m. slot on September 20, 2007, with the second hour being broadcast nationally on ESPN Radio. However, the show came to an end in April 2008 as Smith sought to expand his career in television.

Later in November 2009, he became an on-air contributor to Fox Sports Radio. He then went on to be a Fox Sports Radio morning show host on January 4, 2010, replacing Steve Czaban.

On February 1, 2011, it was announced that he would be returning to ESPN as a columnist for ESPN.com and host for weekday local radio shows on 1050 ESPN Radio New York.

Eventually, he left ESPN for Sirius XM Radio, where he joined Chris Russo’s Mad Dog Sports Channel. Smith returned to ESPN on January 17, 2017. Currently, he is the host of First Take on ESPN and appears as an analyst on various ESPN programs.

Smith began his television career in 1991 when he worked on the now-defunct cable CNN/SI. In August 2005, he started hosting a daily hour-long show on ESPN called Quiet Frankly with Stephen A. Smith. However, the show was canceled in January 2007, and this made Smith concentrate on basketball. He serves as an NBA analyst and appeared on other ESPN shows.

Furthermore, Smith appeared as an anchor on the Sunday morning edition of SportsCenter. On April 17, 2009, he announced on his website that he would be leaving ESPN on May 1, 2009. Later on April 30, 2012, it was announced on-air that he would be joining ESPN’s show First Take on a permanent five-days-per-week basis.

In late 2014, he signed a multi-year deal with ESPN that will pay him over $3 Million annually. Recently, Smith broke into the soccer coverage space on June 10, 2021.
