James Bolam Biography
James Bolam is an English actor best known for his roles as Terry Collier in The Likely Lads, Jack Ford in When the Boat Comes In, Roy Figgis in Only When I Laugh, and many others. This talented actor was born in Sunderland, United Kingdom. James attended Bede Grammar School in Sunderland later proceeding to Bemrose School, Derby.
After high school, he joined college for a professional accounting course and later got chattered as an accountant. He went to join the Central School of Speech and Drama in London to take an acting course.
After college, Bolam’s first appearance on television was back in the 1960s when he featured in movies such as ‘A Kind of Loving’,’ The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, and ‘Inheritance’.
James’ breakthrough came about when he featured as Terry Collier in “The Likely Lads” alongside Rodney Bewes. He also drafted scripts for the BBC Radio version after he became recognized as an established actor.
In 1976, Bolam returned to drama, as Jack Ford in the BBC Television series; When the Boat Comes In. This series ran until 1981. He then moved into comedies and comedy-drama such as Only When I Laugh, The Beiderbecke Affair, The Beiderbecke Tapes, Andy Capp, The Beiderbecke Connection, Second Thoughts, among many others.
On radio, James played WillieGarvin in the 1978 BBC World Service radio adaptation of the Modesty Blaise book; Last Day in Limbo. He further provided the voice narrations for the animated film version of The Plague Dogs. As a narrator, he also worked on the three-part football documentary Three Lions. This is a program that aired before Euro 2000 on BBC One.
All along he is now established as a remarkable actor. Thanks to his focus, the journey is not always smooth.
