Jay Trobec Biography
Jay Trobec is an American journalist who is currently the chairman of the International Association of Broadcast Meteorology, based in Dublin, Ireland. Prior to this, he worked as a Commissioner on Professional Affairs for the American Meteorological Society for six years. Trobec began his career as a sportscaster in North Dakota and then moved to KELO to work in the news department in 1985. He moved to the weather department full-time in the 1990s.
While at the American Meteorological Society, it was his job to keep track of the certification programs for the 13-thousand-member society, as well as oversee the Board of Broadcast Meteorology. He was also to oversee the Board of Certified Consulting Meteorologists, the Board for Private Sector Meteorologists, the Board for Operating Government Meteorologists, the Board for Early Career Professionals, and the Board for Continuing Professional Development.
Still in this role, he has been interviewed by several major newspapers and has appeared on television in a few foreign countries. For him, it was a lot of work and sometimes he got a little stressed. However, he considered himself fortunate to have worked with some of the best and brightest minds in meteorology.
His formal credentials include Certified Broadcast Meteorologist and Certified Consulting Meteorologist designations from the American Meteorological Society. He also holds a National Weather Association Broadcast Seal of Approval. In addition, he is a St. John University graduate as well as a Mississippi State University graduate where he got his Master’s. He also got his Ph. D from South Dakota State University.
