Jesse Tyler Ferguson is an American actor who gained fame for playing Mitchell Pritchet’s role on ABC’s Modern Family from 2009 to 2020. His role on Modern Family has earned Tyler five consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a comedy series. He is also known for playing Ogden in Ordinary Sinner (2001), Griffin and Phoenix (2006) and voicing Shangri Llama’s character on Ice Age Collision Course (2016).
Ferguson was born and raised in the suburbs of Missoula, Montana. He grew up as the middle child in his family of three kids. Jesse was named after his paternal grandmother named Jessie Uppercue Ferguson. He attended St.Pius X High School where he was a member of the drama club and played various theatre plays. Tyler then enrolled and graduated from The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (also known as AMDA) based in New York City
Tyler began his acting career on Broadway as a member of the Albuquerque Children’s Theatre. He then starred in a Tony award-winning play called The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee as the Leaf Coneybear after college. Ferguson then starred in a 2007 Shakespeare in the Park production called A Midsummer Night’s Dream of The Tempest. Ferguson made his official on-screen debut by starring in CBS’s sitcom series known as The Class as Richie Velch.
He then starred in a 2008 thriller called Untraceable. Ferguson landed his breakthrough role as Mitchell Pritchett in ABC’s sitcom Modern Family in 2009. His character represented a successful gay lawyer who has excelled in life. Tyler then appeared in So You Think You Can Dance alongside Chrissy Metz and boosted his fanbase. His most recent roles are in Cocaine Bear (2023) and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (2022).
