Joe Furey Biography
Joe Furey is an American meteorologist currently working as the Co-Chief meteorologist at WTNH News 8. He can be seen on air during the 5 pm to 6 pm news and the 11 pm news, having joined the station in October 2017. In addition, Furey anchors the 8 pm to 10 pm news at WC TX.
Growing up in Norwalk, Connecticut, Joe attended Central Catholic High School and worked most of his high school and early college years at Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk. He is also a proud graduate of Villanova University and Western Connecticut State University where he studied for a degree in Meteorology.
Afterward, he moved to become a Graduate Assistant/Teacher and eventually Assistant Director of the Western Connecticut State University Weather Center in Danbury under Dr. Mel Goldstein.

Furey relocated to The New England Weather Service in Hartford where he did daily weather forecasting for clients including Northeast Utilities while working as the director. His first broadcast career was at NEWS12 Connecticut while doing numerous radio stations like KC101, WAVZ, and WICC. Afterward, he relocated to Hartford.
Furey loves playing baseball and played competitive baseball all the way to his ’50s. Moreover, he is a huge fan of Yankee while his wife loves the Red Sox! Despite all that, his number one hobby is the weather. One of his notable weather stories is when Dr. Mel put him in charge of setting up their big brand new weather data recording station on the roof above the weather office at WCSU.
A few weeks, Hurricane Gloria showed up. The weather team was all excited when the anemometer recorded an 83 mph wind gust and then the weather station flew past the window they were looking out of, smashing on the ground. Joe had forgotten to secure it a place on the roof!
Another of Furey’s favorite stories is when he forecasted 1 inch of snow and we got 1 foot. The following day, he had a bucket of snow land on his head while doing live weather broadcast on TV.
Joe credits his passion and love for weather to his grandparents. The latter came from Newfoundland, Canada, and would sleep with a window open during the winter. They had different stories about icebergs that went by their house in St. John’s Newfoundland. They even narrated how in times of winter the snow was so deep and drifted that the only way out of their house was from a second-floor window.
