Joe Scarborough Biography
Joe Scarborough is an American television host, attorney, and political commentator, as well as a former politician. Currently, Scarborough is the co-host of Morning Joe, MSNBC together with his wife, Mika Brzezinski. Previously, he hosted Scarborough Country on the same station. Prior to that, he was a lawyer and politician, serving in the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 2001, acting as a Republican for Florida’s 1st District.
Additionally, Joe was a visiting fellow at the Havard Institute of Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. Luckily, he was named one of the most influential people in the world in the 2011 Time 100.
Scarborough attended Pensacola Catholic High School in Pensacola, Florida. Later on, he enrolled at the University of Alabama and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in history in 1985. In 1990, he earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Florida College of Law. During his time in school, he wrote music and produced CDs with his band, including the album Calling on Robert E. Lee. Additionally, he also coached football and taught high school.

Joe started his law practice in 1991 in Pensacola, just after joining the Florida Bar. His most high-profile case was briefly representing Michael F. Griffin, who murdered Dr. David Gunn in 1993. Joe made several appearances in court before moving out of the case. In late 1993, Joe’s political profile was also raised when he assisted with a petition drive, opposing a proposed sixty-five percent increase in Pensacola’s property taxes. Luckily, due to his opposition, the following year he became the first Republican Congress representative in 121 years to be elected from Florida’s 1st District.
During his congressional career tenure, Scarborough received a 95% lifetime rating from the American Conservative Union, where he signed a contract with America. He served on the committees of the Judiciary, National Security, the Armed Services, Government Reform and Oversight, Civil Service, and Education. Moreover, he was a member of the New Federalists, a small group formed by young Republican members of Congress.
Furthermore, during the congressional election campaign, he signed the legislative agenda Contract with America. He was re-elected in 1996. In 1998 and 2000, Joe decided to run opposite only write-in candidates. Scarborough being a congressman, opposed abortion. He was also involved in several anti-abortion campaigns and the Unborn Victims of Violence Act.
In May 2001, Joe announced his resignation to spend more time with his children. On July 11, 2017, ha announced on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, that he was leaving Republican Party to become an Independent. He also moved back to practicing law, though he worked as an environmental lawyer. In 2002, he joined the president’s Council on the 21st Century Workforce.

Joe joined MSNBC in April 2003, where he launched the Scarborough Country. In May 2007, he began hosting the Morning Joe show together with Mike Brzezinski. On December 8, 2008, together with his workmate, they started hosting a late-morning radio show for WABC in New York City. Unfortunately, Joe ended the show in April 2010 only to announce that he was relaunching a new format although the show never returned.
Furthermore, Scarborough is also an author. His first book, Rome Wasn’t Burnt in a Day: The Real Dean on How Politicians, Bureaucrats, and Other Washington Barbarians Are Bankrupting America, was released in October 2005. Scarborough’s second book was released on June 9, 2009, The Last Best Hope. His third book, The Right Path: From Ike to Reagan, How Republicans Once Mastered Politics and Can Again, was released on November 12, 2013.
On July 11, 2017, Joe announced that he had quit the Republican Party and that he would not be representing any political party. Scarborough has received several awards and honors from different organizations. He has also been inducted into the University of Alabama College of Communication and Information Sciences Hall of Fame.
