Joe Torres Biography
Joe Torres is an American Award-winning journalist and author currently working as a news anchor and reporter at WABC-TV in New York. Torres occasionally fills in for anchors on the station’s weeknight Eyewitness News Broadcast (typically Bill Ritter). Prior to that, he and Sandra Bookman co-hosted the station’s Saturday and Sunday night newscasts.
He also anchors Tiempo, a long-running and panic-focused contemporary affairs show on WABC that airs on Sunday mornings. Torres is a native of Brooklyn, New York, and is of Puerto Rican ancestry. He joined the Eyewitness News team in 1996 as a general assignment reporter.
Born in Brooklyn New York, Joe attended P.S. 198 until the sixth grade when his family moved to Northern Westchester County. He is a proud graduate of John Jay High School in Cross River.
Joe is also a proud graduate of SUNY Brockport where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Communications. At the college, he played intercollege soccer in New York. Torres is an active member of the varsity soccer, basketball as well and baseball teams.
He started his television career in 1987 as an NBC Page In New York. However, Joe’s first reporting job was at WSAV-TV in Savannah, Georgia where he worked as a general assignment reporter and beat reporter covering county government. After some time, Torres moved to ABC affiliate WNEP-TV in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to work as a Consumer Reporter, general assignment reporter, and Weekend Anchor.
In 1992, Joe got a job as the Jersey Shore correspondent for Disney/ABC-owned WPVI-TV in Philadelphia.

Torres joined the Eyewitness News team as a general assignment reporter in 1996. All through, Joe has built himself as one of the premier street reporters here in the nation’s #1 television market. Versatility is his strength. He has covered a wide scope of topics including crime, politics, religion, education, transportation, and business.
Some of Joe’s most memorable reporting include the extensive coverage of Pope John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis. Prior to the death of John Paul II, Joe followed the globe-trotting Pontiff on his trips to Cuba, Mexico, and the Holy Land, providing New Yorkers with local angles to worldly events. In addition, he was at the Vatican for the Pope’s Silver Anniversary and for his death, when millions flocked to Rome to say goodbye to the spiritual leader.
In April 2005, Joe was at St. Peter’s Square when the white smoke from the Sistine Chapel informed the world of the election of Pope Benedict XVI. Three years later, Torres provided in-depth coverage of Pope Benedict’s visit to New York. He returned to the Vatican and St. Peter’s Square in March of 2013 for the historic election of Pope Francis, the church’s very first Pontiff from Latin America.

For two days a week, Joe comes in from the street and heads to the anchor desk. Every Saturday and Sunday evening Joe serves as Co-Anchor of the 5, 6, and 11 o’clock editions of Eyewitness News This Weekend.
Torres also works as Host of ‘Tiempo,’ a 30-minute public affairs program aimed at the ever-growing Latino population in the New York metropolitan area. ‘Tiempo’ airs each Sunday morning at 11:30.
His distinctive storytelling has earned him a Peabody Award and the Edward R. Murrow Award for his reports on the world-changing events of September 11th. Furthermore, Joe earned an Emmy Award for his coverage of the Greenpoint Gas Tank Implosions in 2001.
