John Avlon Biography
John Avlon is an American journalist, political commentator, editor-in-chief, and a fill-in anchor currently appearing on New Day every morning. He also works as a Senior Political Analyst and anchor at CNN.
Previously, Avlon worked as the editor-in-chief and managing director of The Daily Beast as well as a columnist and associate editor for The New York Sun. He also worked as the Chief speechwriter of former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
John began his career as a speechwriter for Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. He prepared the State of the City Mayor’s Speech, address it to the United Nations General Assembly on Counter-Terrorism, and testimony to the Congress on Homeland Security. After the launch of The Daily Beast in 2018, John joined the organization as a columnist. He worked his way up to become a political editor, and executive editor, and finally became the managing director.
He first appeared on television in 2005 on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart to discuss his book, Independent Country. In June 2018, He switched to work as a CNN full-time Senior Political Analyst on New Day, making regular appearances on television. Moreover, from there, Avlon became a notable personality being interviewed in many documentaries, including HBO’s Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Musicians, Gerrymandering in 2010, and the upcoming Washington History Channel miniseries.

As an author, John has published numerous papers and essays. For instance, he has co-edited the Deadline Artists anthology: The Greatest Newspaper Columns of America. In April 2018, it was revealed that Avlon was working on a book based on the last five weeks of Abraham Lincoln, which was set to be released in the fall of 2020.

Avlon studied at Milton Academy which is a coeducational, independent preparatory school in Milton, Massachusetts in the US. In addition, he is a childhood friend and schoolmate of Matthew Pottinger. Later, he joined Yale University where he studied and received his bachelor’s degree. Moreover, Avlon received his MBA from Columbia University.
