Jonathan Drew Groff is an American actor and singer. He rose to prominence for his role in the original production of Spring Awakening as Melchior Gabor. Prior, Groff has won many accolades including being nominated for two Tony Awards, two Drama League Awards, and a Drama Desk Award. In addition, he is known for his performances on screen, stage, and television.

Groff was born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, United States. He attended middle school and high school in a drama department, and that is where he became inspired to start a career in theater. In high school, he directed and starred in You’re a Good Man at the Fulton Opera House, for which he won a community award. He also performed in The Sound of Music, Ragtime, Cyrano, Evita, My Fair Lady, Peter Pan, and The Pirates of Penzance.

Groff graduated from Conestoga Valley High School in 2003 and was planning to join Carnegie Mellon University. However, he was offered the chance to join the national tour of the musical ‘The Sound of Music’ which changed the course of his life. Soon, he moved to New York City to join the entertainment industry. He made his ‘Broadway’ debut with the musical ‘In My Life’ by Joseph Brooks. Also, Goff appeared in the musical ‘Fame’ at the ‘North Shore Music Theatre, in Beverly, Massachusetts, and earned his Actors Equity Association card.

From 2006 to 2008, he appeared in the ‘Broadway’ production of the rock musical ‘Spring Awakening’ with Lea Michele. His performance in the musical earned him nominations for a ‘Drama Desk Award’ and the ‘Tony Award’ for ‘Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical.’In 2007 Jonathan made his television debut with a recurring role on the soap opera One Life to Live, in the role of Henry Mackler. He made his feature film debut just two years later, in Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock. Goff was cast in series such as Glee (2010 to 2015) as Jesse St. James; and the Starz series Boss (2012), and he currently plays a starring role as FBI agent Holden Ford on the Netflix series Mindhunter.

Additionally, Jonathan is also known for his voice work, having provided the voice of Kristoff in Frozen(2013) and Frozen II (2019). The film became the highest-grossing animated film of all time and earned him a number of awards and nominations. Similarly, he has also been featured in short films and the animated TV series Lego Frozen Northern Lights (2016).In 2017, Groff starred as Jase in the first podcast musical, 36 Questions, written by Chris Littler and Ellen Winter based on The New York Times article “The 36 Questions That Lead to Love”. The story was about a husband and wife trying to salvage their marriage with the titular set of 36 questions.

Moreover, that same year Groff performed in a one-night-only symphonic concert production of Sondheim on Sondheim at the Hollywood Bowl. In 2019, Groff starred as the lovable doomed florist Seymour Krelborn in the celebrated Off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Groff’s Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer. Groff starred opposite Tammy Blanchard and Christian Borle in Alan Menken and Howard Ashman’s beloved musical.

Jonathan received rave reviews for his performance and was an Outer Critics Circle Award honoree, as well as a Lucille Lortel and Drama League. The production was also honored with Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, and Drama League Awards for “Outstanding Revival of a Musical,” and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

In 2021, Groff reunited with the entire original Broadway cast and band of Spring Awakening for a one-night-only, sold-out, 15th-anniversary reunion concert, which benefitted The Actors Fund. The reunion concert was the subject of the HBO documentary, “Spring Awakening: That same year, it was announced that he would star in the live-action hybrid series Lost Ollie directed by Peter Ramsey. The series was to premiere on Netflix in 2022. Apart from that, Groff would reprise his role in the first Broadway revival of the musical in the fall of 2023.
