Kelcey Carlson Biography

Kelcey Carlson is an American reporter and anchor from Indiana who is currently working as a news anchor at KMSP-FOX 9 channel in Minneapolis and St Paul. She serves as a co-anchor of Fox 9 News at 5 and 5:30 and Fox 9 News at 9. Carlson joined the station in January 2014 from WRAL-TV in Raleigh, NC.

Carlson left Purdue Boilermaker country to pursue a career at in-state rival Indiana University. She was born and raised in Lafayette, Indiana. She majored in Journalism with a major in Political Science and minored in French at the university.

Kelcey moved to South Carolina after graduating from college, looking for her first job in the Florence/Myrtle Beach market with CBS station WBTW. In her first two months as a weekend producer, she was thrust into many major stories, including the TWA 800 accident and Hurricanes Bertha and Fran. She then got a job as a “one-man-band” reporter/photographer, where she shot and edited her own stories for daily newscasts.

Carlson was employed at WWMT-Ch. 3 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, after WBTW, and was assigned to cover numerous major stories. The stories included the 2000 Presidential Election doubt in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Timothy McVeigh’s execution. Carlson began doing more investigative reporting in Kalamazoo, where she won accolades for her work on the Sex Offender Registry. Later, she was promoted to weekday morning anchor.

Carlson spent the majority of his career at WRAL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina. She began her career as a reporter before moving on to weekend newscasts and finally the weekday morning show.

During her stay there, Kelcey covered numerous major hurricanes, including Hurricane Isabel, which ravaged the southern Outer Banks. She was in charge of the station’s coverage of the criminal prosecution against presidential contender John Edwards and covered the Duke Lacrosse case. In addition, she was live near Boylston Street after running in the Boston Marathon in 2013, which occurred shortly after the explosions.

Carlson was nominated for Emmys for her enterprise reporting and for her work on John Edwards’ criminal prosecution, and she won one for Best Weekend Newscast. She spent ten and a half years in Raleigh, where she got valuable experience covering Federal Courts, Final Four victories, and the Hurricanes’ Stanley Cup triumph.

Kelcey moved her family north to Minnesota in 2014 for a fantastic chance with FOX 9 as the main evening anchor. She was the first reporter to arrive at Paisley Park the morning of Prince’s death after receiving a tip about his death. She was the field anchor for FOX 9’s coverage on that day, as well as live coverage after the Minnehaha Academy explosion.

Carlson covered the Super Bowl in Houston and the Super Bowl in our own backyard here in the Twin Cities during her time at FOX 9. With the help of her Kalamazoo contacts, she also helped break the news of P.J. Fleck’s employment at the University of Minnesota.

Kelcey is an active runner in her spare time, having completed 31 marathons to date. She has competed in seven Boston Marathons, three of which she qualified for under the men’s timing criteria. She’s been on a lot of difficult and emotional jobs, but one of the most emotional was standing near Boylston Street after the bombs. The tale reached a highly personal level as she juggled live shoots and texts from friends and relatives asking if she was okay.

She’s also completed marathons in Chicago, Berlin, and Grandma’s. Kelcey also won a marathon once upon a time. In 2011, barely four months after the birth of her second child, she ran the Grandfather Mountain Marathon in Boone, North Carolina. “Have you ever won a marathon before?” a woman shouted as she approached the finish line on the uphill road. “No ma’am!” she said. “Well, you’re about to win,” one today!

Kelcey’s family, though, is by far her favorite and most essential responsibility. Charlie, Kellen, and Kathryn are her children with her husband Dave. They are her greatest achievements in life, and spending time with her family is always the nicest time. When they have the opportunity, they like to get away to their Wisconsin cabin to fish, relax, and simply spend time together.

Carlson has served on the boards of both Girls on the Run in Kalamazoo and Girls on the Run in Raleigh. She is also a member of The Positive Coaching Alliance’s board of directors in Minnesota. She and her husband also host a podcast for PCA called “My Sports Life for PCA MN,”. They interview athletes such as Lou Nanne, Corey Koskie, Matt Birk, and others on their journey to success and how they overcame adversity.

Carlson graduated from Indiana University where she received a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.
