Kim Powell Biography
Kim Powell is an award-winning American journalist who currently serves as a general assignment reporter at 3TV and CBS5 in Phoenix, Arizona. She joined the station in July of 2018. Previously, she spent three years as a reporter at WINK in Fort Myers, FL.
In those three years, Powell traveled to the east coast to cover Hurricane Matthew, which closely missed the hotel she was staying in. In the following years, she reported living from her own boarded-up home during Hurricane Irma, which destroyed havoc across Southwest Florida. After the storm, she walked the streets in waders telling the numerous stories of survival, loss, and despair.
Moreover, while in Fort Myers, Powell reported live from multiple wildfires during the dry season and also covered a mass shooting at a small club only a few miles from the station. During her stay there, she saw the crime rate top and reported on how law enforcement intended to settle the many issues ahead of them. The Naples Press Club honored her with the “2017 Outstanding Young Broadcast Journalist Award.”
Before that, Powell worked as a reporter for KWES in Midland, TX for a year, covering the news across all of West Texas. Her most notable moment from Midland is when she went viral for rapping before a live shot.

Powell kicked off her career in the news industry behind the scenes. She served as an assignment editor at KTNV in Las Vegas, NV. While there, she listened to police and fire scanners and arranged the reporter/photographer teams while working closely with the producers.
Regarding her schooling, Powell graduated from Bemidji State University, a small school located in northern Minnesota. For two years, she played for the Beaver softball team before determining to focus on her studies (and nurse her injured shoulder.) At that time, she became the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper.
In her free time, Powell likes hiking, kayaking, and enjoying the great outdoors. When not outside, you can find her hanging out with her two cats, Zipper and Buckle.
