Kris Ketz Biography
Kris Ketz is an Emmy Award-winning journalist who presently works as a news anchor and reporter for ABC affiliate KMBC 9 News. When it comes to significant stories, Ketz is always in the right place at the right moment. On July 4, 1983, he became a member of the station’s staff.
He co-anchored the weekday versions of KMBC 9 News at 5 for more than 14 years until being designated co-anchor of KMBC 9 First News in October 2007. Kris was also named co-anchor of KMBC 9 News weeknights at 6 p.m., 9 p.m., and 10 p.m. in May 2015.
Ketz is a graduate of Davenport, Iowa’s St. Ambrose University. He began his broadcasting career at the age of 18 as a weekend news anchor for Moline, Illinois-based radio station WQUA. He went on to become the station’s news director after working as an afternoon and morning presenter.
Kris made his television debut four years later, in 1981, on WQAD-TV in Moline. It was the station where his father had worked for 35 years as a news anchor. He worked his way up at WQAD from weekend co-anchor and producer to weekday co-anchor.

In addition, Kris’ career highlight was co-anchoring a Father’s Day broadcast of KMBC 9 News at 10 with his father in 1998. In addition, in a reader survey conducted by Kansas City Magazine in 2003 and 2001, he was named Best Reporter. He also received Hope House’s coveted Barbara Potts medal for promoting community awareness about domestic abuse in Kansas City in 2004.
Kris was a member of the Greater Kansas City Hispanic Media Association. Thru his participation in the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, he has also been engaged in raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In addition, he has co-hosted local MDA telethons in Kansas City and the Quad Cities since 1980.
Ketz was also inducted into the Silver Circle of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) in October 2012, an elite group of professionals recognized for making a major contribution to television in the last 25 years.
