Laura Coates Biography
Laura Coates is an American journalist, attorney, and legal analyst for CNN who has hosted a talk radio show, The Laura Coates Show, on SiriusXM’s Urban View since 2017. In January 2021, the show moved to SiriusXM’s POTUS.
Coates earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs, at Princeton University. In 2005, Coates received her J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
After graduating, she began her legal career in Minnesota working as an associate attorney at the firm of Faegre & Benson. However, she left Faegre to become an associate at the New York City law firm of Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman. She later moved from private practice to the United States Department of Justice as a federal prosecutor.
In addition, she was a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice during the Bush and Obama administrations. She specialized in the enforcement of violent felony offenses. She is not currently a practicing attorney and is on inactive status with the Office of Lawyer Registration at the Minnesota Supreme Court.

In May 2016, Coates joined CNN as a legal analyst and is currently a CNN senior legal analyst. Most notably, in 2019, she hosted two TV documentaries on the Oxygen Network. The first, The Disappearance of the Millbrook Twins chronicled her as she investigates the disappearance of 15-year-old twins in Augusta.
Furthermore, she hosted the mini-series documentary Murder and Justice: The Case of Martha Moxley. The series covered an investigation of the death of 15-year-old Martha Moxley in Greenwich, Connecticut. Besides all that, she has written features and offered research to major publications, such as The Washington Post and the Boston Herald.
On the other hand, her first book was a legal guide entitled, You Have the Right: A ConstitutionalGuide to Policing the Police was published in January 2016. Her second upcoming book, Just Pursuit: A Black Prosecutor’s Fight for Fairness, is stated to be released in January of 2022. The book chronicles her experience as a black female federal prosecutor at the US Department of Justice.
