Mackenyu Arata Biography
Mackenyu Arata is a Japanese actor who became famous after his role portraying Wataya Arata in the Chihayafuru live-action trilogy in 2016. This role earned him the 40th Japan Academy of the Year Award in 2017. He is also famous for portraying Enishi Yukishiro in Rurouni Kenshin Saishusho: The Final.
Born in Los Angeles, California, Mackenyu attended Beverly Hill High School in their Advanced Placement Program. He went on to appear in a few film and TV shows while growing up, including the TV mini-series Team Astro and the Japanese feature film Oyaji. Just like any other normal kid, Arata had many interests. He was eager to learn as many things as possible.
At the age of seven, he learned horseback riding and Yabusame. He also practiced Kyokushin Karate since he was 8 years old and was placed third at the US Kyokushin Karate Nationals in middle school. Talking about his acting passion, he got inspired to act at the age of 15 when he watched a Japanese movie and the actor who starred in it inspired him. He held on to the dream of co-starring beside the actor once in his career.

He did it and later co-starred beside the actor (late Haruma Miura) in the movie adaptation of Gunjo Senki. At the age of 16 in 2014, he landed his first feature film lead role in Take a Chance. In the same year, Mackenyu decided to pursue acting in Japan, stating that Japan would be the best place for him due to the variety of roles available for young and upcoming actors.
After his career had firm roots, he went on to appear in many films like Kiss That Kills, Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018), Rurouni Kenshin, and many other films. In 2021, he starred as the lead in the manga adaptation of Brave: Gunjou Senki. In November of the same year, he was cast as Roronoa Zoro in One Piece. He was also cast as Scar in Fullmetal Alchemist in March 2022.
