Matt Engelbrecht Biography
Matt Engelbrecht is an American meteorologist currently serving as the Chief Meteorologist at WNDU. He joined the station in February of 2021. Previously, Matt served as the Chief Meteorologist at WITN-TV in Greenville, North Carolina for more than 10 years.
Engelbrecht was born “Twelve hours out of Mackinaw City” and he has always wanted to combine his passion for weather and interest in communicating anything associated with science.
Engelbrecht joined Valparaiso University in northern Indiana where he earned his bachelor’s degree in both meteorology and television/radio where he learned about the business directly from current ABC News meteorologist Ginger Zee.
While at the University, he could be found chasing storms and tornadoes for the Valparaiso University Storm Intercept Team (VUSIT) or even broadcasting Valpo athletics for the college radio station, WVUR.
Matt interned at WJBK in Detroit under Richard Luterman and he also learned television basics from his high school TPW teacher Roger Smith. In addition, he established a strong base for his career in television.
Engelbrecht’s career kicked off in Tornado Alley as a weekend meteorologist at KWES-TV. After spending five years, he was promoted to become the youngest chief meteorologist in station history at WITN (Market #100).
From wine in Paris, to fatal heights at the Cliffs of Moher, to sailing the Greek Islands, this is when Matt learned the significance of experiencing different places and cultures.
In his spare time, Matt enjoys Notre Dame football or any other of the Detroit sports teams. Moreover, Engelbrecht has been in a musical band, the DCE, and dreams of reuniting with the bass guitar one day.
