Matthew Neal Stell, popularly known as Matt Stell, is a popular American country music singer, songwriter, and guitarist. He released his song “Prayed for You” and his EP Everywhere but On was released in 2019.
Stell was born in Clinton, Arkansas, and was brought up in Center Ridge, Arkansas. He played basketball in high school in the Amateur Athletic Union summer league. From 2002 through 2006, he played college basketball for Drury University on an athletic scholarship for four years.
After college, Stell worked in construction and farming jobs while pursuing a master’s degree in communications at the University of Arkansas. A medical missions tour to Haiti motivated him to apply to a post-baccalaureate premedical program to finish pre-med coursework not taken as a religion and philosophy major.
In addition, he registered at Harvard University’s Extension School’s part-time pre-med program, and he was accepted. However, in 2014, just before the program would have started, he had the opportunity to sign a publishing deal with Wide Open Music, and he took music over, beginning the part-time pre-med program.

In the late 2000s and early 2010s, Matt played as the lead singer of the band The Crashers. At that time, he released three albums independently: the Sound and the Story, Vestibule Blues, and A River Through It in March 2013. The last two were on the label 124 Records. He continued playing gigs and opened for major artists like Eric Church and Luke Bryan. In addition, he wrote for other artists like Casey Donahew, Bart Crow, and the John D. Hale Band. He headed to Nashville in 2014.
Matt released an EP on March 16, 2018, called “Last of the Best.” He also released a single, “Prayed For You“, which he co-wrote with Allison Veltz and producer Ash Bowers. Rolling Stone called “Prayed For You” one of the “10 Best Country Songs to Hear Now”.
The song got the attention of Barry Weiss, a former president and CEO of Jive Records, who eventually signed Stell in July 2018 to his label, RECORDS. Additionally, the president of Good Company Entertainment, Keith Gale, signed on to promote the song on the radio. In 2018, Stell was named a CMT Discovery Artist.

In February 2019, “Prayed For You” hit No. 36 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, and again in March 2019, it hit No. 54 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart. The song attained over 15 million plays on Spotify and 44 million altogether within just over a year.
The official music video for the song featured reality TV star Savannah Chrisley and her fiancé, hockey player Nic Kerdiles. It premiered on July 9, 2018, on People and got over 4.3 million views on YouTube in its 1st ten months.
On April 27, 2019, Stell made his Grand Ole Opry. In the same month, Sony Music Nashville and Arista Nashville joined the team working to promote his career. On June 12, 2019, he made a return appearance at the Grand Ole Opry with the Old Crow Medicine Show and the Del McCoury Band.

In May, Taste of Country selected him as an artist to watch. Matt’s major-label debut EP, the seven-song Everywhere But On, was released May 24, 2019, on Records/Arista Nashville, one week after the debut of the music video for the little track. The EP comprises a collaboration with Jimmie Allen.
