Michael Wooten Biography

Michael Wooten is an Emmy and Murrow Award-winning American journalist currently working as an anchor and managing editor at WGRZ 2 On Your Side in Buffalo, NY, specializing in in-depth investigative reporting.

Wooten comes from a small town in West Virginia. For his education, he went to Marshall University (Go Herd!) on the prestigious Yeager Scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude with Honors, receiving a degree in Broadcast Journalism. In addition, he also studied at Oxford University in England and at Universidad Antonio de Nebrija in Madrid, Spain.

He began his journalism career at NBC affiliate WSAZ-TV, where he worked as a producer, and later on, he became a reporter and weekend, evening anchor. Michael’s most unforgettable story in his hometown was sitting down with then-Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton on the same day. He was the station’s political reporter, so he interviewed dozens of national politicians during the extreme 2008 primary and general election campaigns.

Wooten moved to Buffalo shortly before the 2009 crash of Continental Flight 3407, the first story he covered in Western New York. In the proceeding years, he had the chance of reporting on the families’ various journeys to Washington D.C., when they were fighting for tougher airline regulations to stop another disaster.

Similarly, Wooten has reported on some of the major stories in the country during the last decade. In July 2012, he covered the Aurora, Colorado movie theater killings. Wooten also did lots of live reports for sister stations across the nation. Moreover, he reported from Little Rock, Arkansas following a hurricane; from Chardon, Ohio after the school shooting; Washington, D.C. during “Snowmageddon”; from the Denver area for flooding in 2013; and also from Houston in 2017 for the after-effects of Hurricane Harvey.

Wooten received an Emmy Award for his report on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in New York State. Additionally, he has been nominated for various other Emmy awards and has won numerous Associated Press awards, including one for Best Continuing Coverage and two for Best Enterprise Reporting. Furthermore, in 2015, WGRZ won a regional Edward R. Murrow award for Wooten’s investigative reporting on “Cell Phone Spying” at the Erie County Sheriff’s Office. In 2018, his work contributed to another regional Edward R. Murrow award for innovation.

Wooten resides in Buffalo near Downtown. He is a big sports fan, enjoys WNY summers, and enjoys traveling throughout Western New York and around the globe.
