Mickey Guyton is an American country music singer and songwriter who rose to fame with her debut single Better Than You Left Me in 2015 which earned her an Academy of Country Music Award nomination for “New Female Vocalist of the Year” in 2016. She has released several EPs such as Unbreakable (2014), Bridges (2020), Sister (2019), and Somethin’ Bout You (2022).

Mickey was born and brought up in Arlington, Texas, United States. She enrolled in a local public school where she faced racial discrimination from other families in the neighborhood which forced her parents to transfer her to a private school. Despite this change, Guyton continued to experience racism. Eventually, she was able to graduate high school to pursue country music at Santa Monica College. Additionally, she also studied business and worked several jobs which enabled her to support herself.

She started singing in church at a young age. She was drawn to a variety of artists with big voices such as Dolly Parton, CeCe Winans, Whitney Houston, and LeAnn Rimes. After signing with Capitol Records Nashville, Mickey’s first appearance was an all-star concert at the White House captured by PBS. In 2015 she released her self-titled EP featuring her debut single “Better Than You Left Me”. Which peaked at 34 on Billboard’s Country Airplay, earning her the music industry bible’s stamp as one of “10 Hot Country Artists to Watch in 2015.” Guyton’s follow-up, “Heartbreak Song,” went to 45 on the same chart in 2016. More singles arrived in 2019, including “Hold On”, “Sister,” and “Crazy.”

Additionally, she also released a song called “Black Like Me”, which won her the title of the first black female artist to perform at the Academy of Country Music awards. In September 2020, Guyton released her third EP titled Bridges. Later on, she collaborated with Dean Brody on the song “Boys” which made her the first Black woman to achieve a number-one hit on the Canada Country chart. Her debut album Remember Her Name followed in 2021. Guyton’s music is defined by country, pop, and R&B influences.

Apart from that, Guyton also performed the National Anthem at Super Bowl LVI. On the other hand, she collaborated with Florida Georgia Line’s Tyler Hubbard to record the song “Somethin’ Bout You” in August 2022. Prior, she also co-hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards with Keith Urban, becoming the first black woman to host the ceremony.
