Mike Avery is an American Emmy Award-winning journalist who has been working at FOX 17 News as an anchor for Fox 17 Morning News since 2010. Avery joined the station’s team in 2005 as a weekend anchor for the 10 p.m. show.
Previously, Mike was a morning news anchor at The E.W. Scripps Company from June 2005 to 2010. He also anchored at WJCL ABC 22 and WTGS FOX 28 Television from September 2001 until May 2005.
In addition, Avery served as a sports director at WVII/WFVX/BANGOR from October 2000 to August 2001, after leaving KSLA TV as a weekend sports anchor from January 1999 to September 2000. Moreover, Mike was a weekend sports anchor at KNOE-TV 8 based in the Monroe, Louisiana area from March 1997 to December 1998.
Mike has been honored for his good work over the years, including an Associated Press award for continuing coverage of the Kalamazoo Flood in 2008 as well as an AP for the Best Sportscast award in Louisiana in 1998.
Avery enrolled at East Syracuse Minoa Central High School in 1984 and graduated in 1987 with his high school education certificate. Later on, in 1988, he joined The Ohio State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication, Journalism, and Related Programs in 1992. While at the university, Avery was a four-year letterman for the Buckeyes on the lacrosse team and finished his career as the 5th all-time leading scorer.
