Mike Holmes Biography
Mike Holmes is a Canadian builder, contractor, investor, businessman, philanthropist, and television host. He is best known for hosting the television series, Holmes on Homes, where he rescued homeowners from renovations gone wrong.
Holmes discovers serious problems such as dangerous wiring, asbestos, mold, inadequate insulation, structural damage, and more. All along he has continued to feature in television series, most recently appearing in Holmes and Holmes.
Mike learned his craft from his father who trained him from an early age. By the time, Holmes was 19, he had started his first contracting company with a crew of 13 employees. At the age of 21, he founded his own renovation company. In his 20-year contracting career, Mike has run the two companies at a go.
In 2006, Mike started The Holmes Foundation after seeing a renovation that was so poorly done. After he saw the structure, he felt it was necessary for him to bring down the house and start again rather than try to repair the damage. The purpose of the foundation is to encourage young people to enter the building trades as well as to assist those who have been impoverished by bad renovations. He closely works with SOS Children’s Villages.
In 2006, Holmes was recognized in the House of Commons of Canada for his promotion of skilled trades and advocacy for improved building standards. He was further recognized as an “extraordinary craftsperson” and “an accomplished master builder with a social conscience”.
Far from the screens, Mike is the author of two successful books namely; Home Renovation with Canada’s Most Trusted Contractor and Holmes Inspection: Everything You Need to Know Before You Buy or Sell Your Home. He also writes as a weekly newspaper columnist.
Mike Holmes Television Career
Mike’s first television series was Holmes on Holmes, which premiered in 2003, on Corus Entertainment’s HGTV Canada. In June 2019, Bell Media announced a new development deal with Mike, ending his relationship with HGTV Canada. His library programming moved to air on Gusto, which was later rebranded to CTV Life Channe. On the Channel, two series were announced including Holmes 911 and the Holmes Family Rescue for CTV in 2020.
