Muhoozi Kainerugaba Biography
Muhoozi Kainerugaba is a Ugandan lieutenant general who serves as the commander of the land forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF). He was previously the commander of the Special Forces Command (SFC). However, both the UPDF and the SFC are accused of using excessive force and abductions. Following this, Muhoozi and other senior officials are mentioned in an International Criminal Court complaint.
In 2017, he was appointed Presidential Adviser, which led to speculations that he is being prepared for the presidency. Later on, he was reappointed as the Commander of the elite Special Forces Command (SFC) in December 2020. Muhoozi served in the same position from 2008 to 2017.
As a child, he attended schools in Tanzania, Mount Kenya Academy in Nyeri Kenya, and Sweden. After his father became President of Uganda, he attended Kampala Parents School, King’s College Budo, and St. Mary’s College Kisubi and graduated in 1994. He was admitted to the Egyptian Military Academy where he took both the company and battalion commanders courses.
Kainerugaba also attended the Kalama Armoured Warefare Training School. In 2017 he was admitted to a one-year course at the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, graduating in June 2008. Following, this, he completed the Executive National Security Programme at the South African Defence College.

In 1999, he joined the UPDF at the rank of officer cadet and graduated in 2000 from Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, the British Army’s officer training school. Later in 2011, he was promoted to Colonel. Muhoozi then enrolled at the South African National Defense College for the Executive National Program in 2012.
In August of the same year, he was promoted to Brigadier General. In addition, he was appointed Commander of Special Forces Command. He was one of the senior UPDF commanders who deployed to South Sudan to support the Government of South Sudan after fighting broke out in Juba in 2013 and 2014.
Muhoozi was then appointed Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Duties, in 2017. He held this position till December of 2020. In 2019, his father, President Museveni, promoted him to the rank of Lieutenant General, the second-highest rank in the UPDF. In June of 2021, he was appointed Commander of UPDF Land forces.

Kainerugaba has been a subject of controversy for quite some time. On December 31, 2020, three days after being re-appointed SFC commander, he posted a number of tweets attacking Bobi Wine. These tweets were considered by many Ugandans to have promoted tribalism. He removed the tweets after many negative reactions from the people.
A $17 Million tender contract to deliver medical oxygen was awarded to Kainerugaba’s wife Charlotte’s company Silverbacks, leading to accusations of corruption. During the Covid-19 explosion of June 2021, the oxygen production turned out to be malfunctioning causing many COVID patients to die.
As of March 2022, he is still an active serving officer in the UPDF and some people have criticized his latest active involvement in politics. Kainerugaba played an active role in the mending of the Rwanda-Uganda relationship culminating in the successful re-opening of Uganda’s border with Rwanda. However, active serving military personnel are barned from engaging in active political roles in Uganda. This is according to the UPDF rules.
Through Twitter on March 8, 2022, he announced that he would be retiring from the UPDF although no timeline for the retirement was given.
