Robertson, along with his CNN colleagues, received Emmy and Peabody Awards in 2012 for his detailed examination of the Arab Spring and its ramifications as it moved across the Middle East. He covered both sides of the Libyan conflict, interviewing Muammar Gadhafi’s sons, Saif al Islam and Saadi Gadhafi, and being the first to broadcast live from the Gadhafi compound following NATO airstrikes. Eman al-Obeidy, an alleged rape survivor whose story of kidnapping, torture, and rape by Gadhafi forces has gone viral, was also interviewed.
Robertson secured the first Western TV interview with the region’s Crown Prince in Bahrain, as well as live coverage of tear gas in the thick of the clashes. He also had an exclusive first interview with Najib Mikati, Lebanon’s then-new Prime Minister, as street crime erupted.
Robertson worked in conflict zones in Afghanistan, the former Yugoslavia, Pakistan, and the Middle East for more than 20 years, breaking news and winning awards for insightful documentaries and in-depth news reports. He reported a wide range of stories and, after he was killed by US Navy Seals in May 2011, was one of the first Western journalists to penetrate Osama Bin Laden’s compound. He wrote from Norway about Anders Breivik’s horrific massacre. In Beirut, Lebanon, he reported from Ground Zero, covering the 2006 Israeli-Lebanon crisis.
