Nicole Mitchell Biography

Nicole Mitchell is a renowned American on-camera meteorologist currently working for KSTP 5 Eyewitness News in St. Paul, Minnesota. Mitchell joined KSTP 5 in Minneapolis-St. Paul in June 2017. She is also a Major in the Air National Guard, commanding the 126th Weather Flight.

Previously, Nicole worked in the U.S. Air Force Reserve, assigned to the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi, as an aerial reconnaissance weather officer. She has also worked at the Weather Channel from 2004 to 2011 and with Al Jazeera from 2013 to 2016.

Nicole has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech-Communications from the University of Minnesota, in addition to her Air Force degree in weather. Her desire to learn led her to pursue a Juris Doctorate (legal degree) at Georgia State University. She also belongs to the American Meteorological Society and has worn the AMS Seal since 2000.

Nicole started her career in weather right out of High School when she joined the Minnesota Air National Guard and was trained by the military first as a Weather Observer. Eventually, she trained as a Weather Forecaster, giving her the opportunity to forecast weather both around the country and around the globe.

Later on, Nicole transferred from the National Guard into the Airforce Reserves, where she now works as a Weather officer for the Hurricane Hunters. The Hurricanes fly into tropical weather to gather data which is used in the forecasting of tropical storms and hurricanes. She has also flown into storms such as hurricane Katrina and Wilma.

Nicole’s television carer started in Duluth, MN, where she worked as an Assignment Manager, but also reported, produced, and began doing TV weather. She then worked as a television meteorologist in Rapid City, SD, South Bend, IN, Tulsa, OK, Mimi, and New York City.
