Nicole Shanahan Biography
Nicole Shanahan is an American entrepreneur, attorney, potent professional, and the founder and CEO of an integrated patent management platform ClerAccessIP. She is currently a research fellow at the Stanford Center for Legal Informatics, a joint center of the Sanford Law School and the Stanford University Computer Science Department.
Nicole recently reported a Global Consortium for the platform and other entrepreneurial endeavors, Bia Echo Foundation. She also helps by amending marriage contracts to foster healthy domestic ties, in addition to advocating for criminal justice and patent reform.
Shanahan graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Asian studies, a minor in economics, and Mandarin Chinese. She earned a certificate in World Trade Organization studies from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in 2007. In addition, she interned for less than a year at Georgopolous and Economidis in 2006 and then worked as a consultant for Longan Law Firm’s international practice area.

Nicole also studied IP trade and Chinese law at the National University of Singapore in 2013. She graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law with a Juris Doctorate in high technology law, intellectual property, and litigation. She was also an associate and journal editor on computer and high technology law.
Nicole worked for Townsend & Townsend and Crew, LLP, as a patent specialist in 2009. From March 2009 to April 2010, she worked as an IP paralegal and database specialist at the law firm Rutan and Tucker LLP in Costa Mesa, Orange County. In March 2010, she joined the start-up phase of the financial services provider “RPX Corporation.” She worked as a patent specialist there for a short time. She worked individually with various start-up companies, utilizing “PDB Patent Data” to help them maximize their patent data efforts.
Shanahan founded “ClearAccessIP,” an automated patent administration and valuation company, in January 2013 and has served as its CEO since then. She worked for many legal companies and then a licensing company for four years before coming up with the idea for the business. While in law school, she worked on assembling a great technical team, which provided her concept with a framework.

Shanahan was featured on the cover of the “American Bar Association” journal in April 2014, with the story “Self Starters: Women Are Squarely in the Picture Where Law and Technology Combine.” She introduced the first live beta of the “Zero-Touch Patent Docketing” service for patent trial attorneys and in-house patent management groups later that month. Shanahan’s first company was formed as a result of the start-up.
From July 2014 to the present, Shanahan has been a residential research fellow at “The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics.” She is involved in CodeX-related academic projects, such as the Stanford OpenData Initiative, as well as providing legal and societal solutions. Shanahan was instrumental in forming a collaboration between “CodeX” and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. This was to help with data analysis for the latter’s high-profile “Task Force Investigating Police Misconduct” project.
She’s working on a project called “Smart Prosecution,” in which she’s developing a “Coasean Mapping” economic theory to predict the movement and character of legal artificial intelligence. Moreover, she is also the founder of the “Bia-Echo Nonprofit”. It is a private foundation dedicated to maintaining societal harmony so that future generations can thrive.
