Peter Helliar Biography
Peter Jason Matthew Helliar is an Australian comedian, actor, television, and radio presenter, writer, producer, and director. Helliar is famous for his work on television as a former co-host on Network Ten from 2014 to December 2022. In addition, he won the Gold Logie, a prestigious award bestowed upon the Most Popular Personality on Television in 2017.
Helliar has made guest appearances on various shows including Melbourne International Comedy Festival, The Loft Live, Rove, Celebrity Name Game, and All-Star Family Feud among others. In 1997, he became a regular stand-up comic on RMITV’s weekly variety show Under Melbourne Tonight broadcast on C31 Melbourne, hosted by Stephen Hall and Vincent Hedger.
Peter rose to fame after being featured as a regular guest to Rove McManus on Rove, which aired on the Nine Network. Later on, the show moved to Channel Ten, where he worked until the show ended in 2009. Helliar was cast in the comedy sketch program skitHOUSE that shows on Network Ten from 2003 to 2004. The series was well performed and obtained an award for the ‘Best Scripted Format Award’ in the International Format Awards at MIPCOM 2013 in Cannes. In addition, he has also directed another series called How to Stay Married for Network Ten premiered in 2018 and returns in 2020.
Furthermore, Peter is the author of the much-loved children’s book series, Frankie Fish published by Hardie Grant and Egmont. In 2018, Frankie Fish was voted one of Australia’s Top 50 Kids books in the annual Better Reading Top 50 Kids Books poll. Peter also co-authored with his wife Bridget Helliar the children’s book Trippin’ With Kids. At the end of 2022, he released another children’s book called Herman Crab. Helliar has been one of Australia’s favorite comedians since his first appearance on our TV screens as a core cast member on the Logie Award-winning Rove back in 1999.
Additionally, he was a regular guest on ABC’s national youth network Triple J. Peter also worked in an Austereo radio network alongside TV colleagues Rove McManus and Corinne Grant on the weekly program Saturday Morning Rove. He also has done his own show called Pete’s Show, which aired from 10 am – 12 pm on Fridays across the Today Network.
