Ray Suarez Biography
Ray Suarez is an American journalist who is currently working as a broadcast journalist and is the current John J. McCloy Visiting Professor of American Studies at Amherst College. Most recently, he was the host of Inside Story on Al Jazeera America. He hosted this program until the network ceased operation in 2016.
Following this, he joined the PBS NewsHour in 1999 and was a senior correspondent for the evening news program on the PBS television network until 2013. In addition, he is the host of the international news and analysis public radio program America Abroad from Public Radio International. Ray was also the host of the National Public Radio program Talk of the Nation from 1993-1999.
In his more than 30-year career in the news business, he also worked as a radio reporter in London and Rome, and as a Los Angeles correspondent for CNN. He is currently one of the US correspondents for Euronews. Born and raised in Brooklyn, he attended several public schools before eventually graduating high school from John Dewey High School in 1974.
In 2009, he was awarded the Distinguished Eagle Sout Award by the NCAC. He later earned a Bachelor of Arts in African History from New York University and a Masters in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago. Suarez began his career working at the campus radio station of New York University upon enrolling there as a student. He later moved to the university’s newspaper.

Following his graduation, he worked as a freelance reporter in London and Rome. His coverage of the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II led to his being hired by CBS Radio. Following this, he was hired by ABC and then CNN. Suarez became a regular correspondent for the PBS NewsHour in 1999 and became a rotating anchor between 2009 and 2013.
Apart from his journalism career, Suarez is also a certified author. He is the author of three books. The most recent one is Latino Americans: The 500-Year Legacy That Shaped a Nation published by Penguin/Celebra in 2013. He is also the author of The Old NeighbourhooD: What We Lost in the Great Suburban Migration:1966-1999.
