Rick Stein Biography

Christopher Richard Stein is an English celebrity chef, restaurateur, writer, and television presenter. He is the head chef and a co-owner of the “Rick Stein at Bannisters” in Mollymook and Port Stephens in Australia. Stein has also written cookery books and presented television programs.

Richard was born in  Churchill, Oxfordshire. He attended his education at Well Court outside Tewkesbury. Thereafter he transferred to Wells House, the Court’s bigger sister school, and last at Uppingham School. After that, he completed a hotel management traineeship at Great Western Royal Hotel in Paddington. Shortly afterward he worked there for six months before moving to Australia.

While there in Australia, he worked as a laborer in an abattoir as well as a clerk in a naval dockyard. He then decided to further his education and was admitted to New College, Oxford, where he graduated with a degree in English. Soon after graduating from college, he together with his friend Johnny opened up a Nightclub in Padstow where he served Vesta meals. However, they regularly skirmished bt the police which led to the closing of the shop.

Afterward, Stein and his wife Jill converted the place into a small harbor-side bistro called ‘The Seafood Restaurant’. He has run the Seafood Restaurant for more than 25 years, seeing it grow from a seaside bistro to an award-winning restaurant with an international reputation. Aside from that, Rick made his first television appearance as a guest chef in Keith Floyd’s show Floyd on Fish in 1985. After that, he appeared again in Floyd’s television series documentary Floyd on Food. Thereafter, he was seen in numerous award-winning television shows including, Fruits of the Sea, Rick Stein’s Seafood Lover’s Guide, and Rick Stein’s Food Heroes among others.

In addition, Rick has received numerous awards and honors, including the Glenfiddich Trophy for his outstanding contribution to widening the understanding and appreciation of excellent food and drink in Britain. He has also won the AA Guide Chefs’ Chef of the Year for 1999-2000. In 2003, Stein was awarded the OBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for his services to Cornish Tourism. He opened up his second restaurant at Bannisters in Salamander Bay, Port Stephens.

Furthermore, Stein has authored a number of cookbooks too; many of them have been companion books for a television series. On top of that, he has also penned his autobiography, Under a Mackerel Sky: A Memoir, which came out in 2013. He has been associated with charities Project like South West PESCA the National Mission for Deep Sea Fishermen, and The National Trust among others. Currently, he is the head chef and co-owner of “Rick Stein at Bannisters” at Mollymook, New South Wales, Australia.
