Roland Martin born Roland Sebastian Martin is a seasoned American journalist, columnist, and commentator. He is a CNN contributor based in Chicago as well as a key member of CNN’s Best Political Team on Television.
Since joining CNN in 2007, Martin has hosted a variety of television programs including the What Would Jesus Really Do?” series. Most recently, he hosted a three-part series on the issues presidential candidates avoid addressing as Election Day nears.
He is also the host and managing director of #RolandMartinUnfiltered. This is the first daily online show in history with its main focus on news and analysis of politics, entertainment, sports, and culture from explicitly an African-American approach.

Roland Martin Career
After graduating from Texas A&M in 1991, Roland began work at the Austin American-Statesman. However, he later left the station and became a city hall reporter for Forth Worth Star-Telegram.
In 1995, Roland became a morning driver reporter with KRLD radio as a sports reporter. During his tenure in KRLD, he won the top sports reporting award from the National Association of Black Journalists. In addition, he received honors from the Houston Press Club.
Martin became a news editor and morning anchor at KKDA radio’s 730 AM show. He was as well an editor at Dallas Weekly. Beginning in 2000, Roland worked as a freelance producer covering the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles.
A year later, in 2001, Martin became the first editor of Blackamericanweb.com, an establishment founded by Tom Joyner and his wife Rev. Jacquie Hood Martin. He later returned to the radio working as a news correspondent for the American Urban Radio Network. Moreover, he worked as a sports commentator on Washington, D.C.-based radio station WOL’s Fifth Quarter Program.
Roland also launched the ROMAR Media Group in Dallas, later becoming the first news editor for the new Savoy magazine. In the year 2007, Martin made his first appearance on CNN and Fox television’s conservative-oriented O’Reilly Factor.

This was after he was hired as a consultant by the Chicago Defender in 2004. Martin rose to work as an executive editor/general manager of the Chicago Defender, the nation’s most historic black newspaper. At the same time, he worked as a radio talk show host for WVON-AM in Chicago.

He was named three consecutive times in 2008, 2009, and 2010 by Ebony as one of the 150 Most Influential African Americans in the United States. Martin is also the 2009 winner of the NAACP Image Award for Best Interview for “In Conversation: The Michelle Obama Interview”. Furthermore, he was named one of the top 50 political pundits by the Daily Telegraph in the United Kingdom.
