Sam Nichols Biography
Sam Nichols is an American journalist currently serving as the Chief Meteorologist at KTAB-TV, the CBS affiliate in Abilene, Texas where he has been a weathercaster for twenty years.
Nichols has been voted “Favorite TV Weather Person” in the Abilene Reporter-News Reader’s Choice Awards multiple times. In addition, he has been awarded the “Bell” Award for outstanding media coverage of issues in education by the Texas Retired Teachers’ Association.
Sam retired from coaching women’s basketball after 33 years in 2007. He was McMurry University’s Head Women’s Basketball Coach for the past 12 years. He retired as the all-time winningest Women’s Basketball Coach in McMurry University history. Sam was later named into the McMurry University Athletic Hall of Honor in 2017.
He is the founder and president of Basketball Smiles, a 20-year-old initiative that provides free basketball camps in the Bahamas’ inner cities. Sam was designated a Paul Harris Fellow in 2013 “in recognition of the tangible and significant support offered to the advancement of better understanding and friendlier relations between peoples of the world.”
In 2018, Sam competed in Dancing With the Abilene Stars and won the Best Costume Award. He also appeared in the Abilene Opera Association’s performance of West Side Story in 2019.
Sam received the Kiwanis Community Caring Award from the Kiwanis Club of Greater Abilene in August 2019 for his efforts with Basketball Smiles. Furthermore, he was named Volunteer Honoree of the Year for 2019 for the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council Hearts for the Arts by the Abilene Opera Association in October.
Sam and his wife Sandy are both members of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee and are involved in various local charitable initiatives.
