Shara Park Biography

Shara Park is a five-time Emmy Award-winning journalist who currently anchors KSL 5 News Today and KSL 5 News at Noon’s breaking news. In 2007, she became a member of the KSL 5 News crew. She may also be heard on KSL NewsRadio 102.7 FM/1160 AM, where she reports on the latest local news.

Shara earned a bachelor’s degree in communications with a journalism minor from Northern Illinois University. She was named the University’s 2004 Broadcaster of the Year for her work with NTC, CNN Local Edition, while she was there. Shara was a part of the Division I Huskies’ volleyball team and the Track & Field team while at NIU.

For breaking news, Park is one of KSL’s go-to reporters. She reported on the raging wildfires in Utah County, the death of University of Utah student-athlete Lauren McCluskey, and the death of Thomas S. Monson, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in 2018.

Shara also covered the terrorist incident on Westminster Bridge in London, England in 2017, which killed a Utah man and injured his wife. She was the first to report the finding of the missing UTA truck belonging to kidnapped and killed UTA employee Kay Ricks near Pinedale, Wyoming, in 2016.

Shara’s investigation into the avalanche fatality of BYU student Ashleigh Cox in 2014 resulted in modifications to dispatch codes and the installation of an emergency phone in American Fork Canyon. She was part of Utah Task Force 1’s response to devastating flooding in Boulder, Colorado, in 2013. Shara also came to Puyallup, Washington in 2012 to cover Susan Cox Powell’s two sons’ tragic murders at the hands of their father.

Shara previously worked as a sports/news anchor for KCSG Television in St. George, Utah, before joining KSL. Prior to that, she had the tough task of living in Hawaii and interning as a feature sports journalist with KWXX Radio and KPUA. Shara also worked at ABC 4 News in Utah for two sports internships.

Shara has received multiple awards from the Rocky Mountain Southwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for her reporting. She won an Emmy in 2019 for her work on the documentary Road to Recovery, which examined opioid abuse in Utah in depth. Shara’s coverage of school safety and the Safe UT app was also included in a series of reports that earned KSL the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Outstanding Journalism in 2019. Shara has also received honors from the Society of Professional Journalists and the Utah Broadcasters Association. The SPJ named her Utah’s best television reporter in 2019 and awarded her first place for her breaking news reporting, an award she won in 2017.
