Stephen Whitney “Whit” Johnson is an American journalist and co-anchor of the weekend editions of Good Morning America and the anchor of the Saturday edition of ABC World News Tonight. Johnson is also a fill-in and substitute anchor for both Good Morning America, and ABC World News Tonight.

Johnson was born and raised in San Francisco, California. He graduated from San Francisco State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Television and Radio Broadcasting. Whit began his professional career in 2005 as a reporter and evening weekend anchor for NBC affiliate KNDO/KNDU-TV in Yakima, Tri-Cities, Washington. He then moved to KSL-TV  where he served as a reporter and as an anchor on evening weekdays.

Johnson joined CBS News in 2009, as a news correspondent and a fill-in anchor. While there he covered national news like the White House and Capitol Hill. He also reported the story of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on several stops across the Middle East and interviewed her minutes after news broke that Muammar Gaddafi had been killed. In 2012, Johnson joined KNBC in Los Angeles as an anchor and general-assignment reporter. During his time at KNBC, Johnson reported on two Olympics including the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Moreover, he also co-hosted the station’s Emmy-winning special report of the Opening Ceremony in Rio. Apart from that, Whit was part of Today in L.A., as co-anchor alongside Daniella Guzman. In addition, he won the Golden Mike Award for Best Daytime News Broadcast in 2017. Furthermore, Whit joined ABC News in 2018 as a correspondent. While there he covered the groundbreaking arrest of the suspected Golden State Killer; the pivotal 2018 midterm elections. After a few months, he took over as a co-anchor of the weekend editions of Good Morning America.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Johnson worked as the lead correspondent for ABC News, providing news and information needed to the viewers. In addition, he also covered the 2020 presidential election cycle, covering election week from Arizona and the primaries for the Democratic Party. In 2021, it was announced that Johnson would become the Saturday anchor of ABC World News Tonight, replacing Tom Llamas, as well as continue to co-anchor Good Morning America on the weekends.
