Micah Materre Biography
Micah Materre is an American Emmy Award-winning journalist currently the anchor of the WGN Evening News at Five and Six and the WGN News at Nine and Ten. Before Micah was given his current role as the WGN News at Nine anchors in 2009, she co-anchored WGN Midday News from January 2003 to October 2009.
Materre had an early passion for journalism, a passion that grew even after he graduated from a local high school in Chicago. She then joined Drake University and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism.
Micah first joined WGN-TV in January 1998 as the station’s morning news co-anchor and medical reporter. She has anchored all of the newscasts at WGN and covered entertainment news and special assignment stories.
Notably, Micah covered the historic inauguration of America’s first black President. Furthermore, she reports and co-produces the “Chicago’s Very Own” bi-weekly segment for WGN News and she is the host of WGN’s public affairs program, “People to People.”
A Chicago native, Micah spent eight years at WJBK-TV in Detroit, where she worked as the main anchor and general assignment reporter. Additionally, at WJBK, Micah’s work received numerous awards and accolades, including an Emmy and an award from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. In 2014, she received a Chicago/Midwest Emmy and was also honored as a diversity trailblazer by Barnes and Thornburg LLP.
Before moving to the Motor City, Materre cut her teeth in Cedar Rapids, Iowa as a general assignment reporter and weekend anchor. As of now, she has over 30 years of experience as a journalist and broadcaster.

Starting her broadcast career in 1983 at NPR affiliate WBEZ radio in Chicago, she produced and reported for four years. Moreover, she taught radio production at Columbia College.
Micah has also been featured in the New York Times Magazine, Glamor, Ebony, Good Housekeeping, Today’s Chicago Woman, “Who’s Who in Black Chicago,” Michigan Avenue Magazine, and RedEye, among other local and national magazines.
Materre serves as a commentator, emcee, and honorary chairperson for a lot of community and civic organizations across Chicago. She is also on the Board of Directors for the Chicago Children’s Choir and serves on Tutoring Chicago’s Advisory Board. In addition, Materre is a member of the civic organization, Links, Incorporated, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the National Association of Black Journalists.
